Archie Comics Review

Archie Comics is a legend of the publishing house Archie Comics, which was founded in 1939 under the name MLJ Comics. For the first time funny stories about a red-haired boy appeared in Pep Comics magazine in 1941 and resembled rather old Looney Tunes shows. Simple sketches without a cross-cutting plot with chases and funny falls. Since then, the world has seen almost 700 issues of comic stories about Archie and his friends. Until, in 2015, the publisher decided to restart the series from the first issue, with an updated design that would suit the modern generation of readers. It is about the reincarnated series "Archie" that I propose to talk today.

Archie

The plot of the first volume is fictional by Mark Wade and embodied in the drawing by Fiona Staples, Annie Wu and Veronica Fish. This is NO LONGER a cartoon, but a fashionable youth series. The events of the hand-drawn story take place in the town of Riverdale. In the center of the story, Archie is a simple, somewhat strange guy, plays the guitar well and is popular among his peers at his native school. So, Archie is NOT a superhero, and does not have supernatural superpowers or abilities, but he (had?) A girl and friends who are constantly thinking about how to get his ass out of another scrape.

There are three artists who worked on the first volume: Fiona Staples, Annie Wu and Veronica Fish. Fiona's style is familiar to me from the Saga and in "Archie" he is immediately recognized. Similar principles in the construction of panels and angles, warm contrasting colors, love for close-ups and concise backdrops. Annie and Wu's style is noticeably different from Fiona's drawing and, in my opinion, not for the better.

Archie

To make the concept of the comic book clearer to you, remember projects like "Beverly Hills, 90210" or "Helen and Friends", although why, if Archie has his own successful TV series. The first episode of the television teen drama "Riverdale" was released on TV screens in January 2017 and received a lot of positive reviews. In my opinion, the very fact of the success of the series was the root cause of the appearance of the comic Archie Ukrainian.

BookChef publishing house famously broke into the branch of the Ukrainian comics publishing house and immediately issued the first two volumes of Archie, and according to rumors they were going to issue THREE at once! And this haste played a cruel joke with the publishing house, as they say, "fucked up and crooked". The fact is that the comic is just terribly twisted and has a huge bunch of flaws. A crooked and unsuccessful font, a bunch of dialog bubbles, where the text is pressed in, like a pot-bellied uncle in an old elevator. Yes, there are text clouds where there is no text at all. It was enough for me to look at the cover and casually roll up the inscription on the sign to start twitching my eye.

I understand the delight and high ratings among the American audience, because for them it is part of the culture, several generations of Americans have grown up on Archie comics. The story of teenagers living carefree in sunny Riverdale, munching burgers, playing rock in dad's garages and sighing in love at the school lockers is easy and funny and this is its main plus and minus at the same time. I didn't find anything for myself in this story. My school youth was completely different, the problems that a Ukrainian schoolboy had to deal with in the 90s were significantly cynical and immeasurably far from "torment" the choice of the queen of the school ball.

The first volume of "Archie" seemed to me superficial and oversaturated with platitudes and cliches that have nothing to do with either modern teenagers or youth in general. The author's attempts to create at least some drama look childishly naive and sucked out of the finger. If your age is 16-25 years old, you are an optimist and believe in a better future, you want something light, bright and funny and that "stylish youth", then malopis "Archie" is the perfect choice for you.
