Ivangorod is a small border town in the Leningrad region. The Estonian city of Narva is already located opposite. The border of the two neighboring countries, as 500 years ago, runs in the middle of the river with the same name. Therefore, in 1492, by the decree of Ivan 3, it was decided to erect a fortress in this place to protect the lands of the Moscow Principality from foreign invaders. In addition, on the other side of the river, there was a well-fortified Livonian fortress - Narva, built in the 13th century.
The construction of the fortress.
Ivangorod fortress was built in a few months on a small hill. Initially, it was wooden, had regular shapes and four towers. Due to its small size, the fortress could not withstand the siege of the enemy for a long time. And in 1496 it was captured, but almost immediately repulsed. After that, it was decided to significantly increase the area of the fortress. After the reconstruction, it became bigger and more majestic than the neighboring Narva.
Many raids and attacks survived the walls of the Ivangorod fortress. It was captured by the Swedes and Crusaders. But the Russians have always returned their lands. During the war, the Germans destroyed several towers and part of the fortress wall. But in general, the Ivangorod fortress has been well preserved. Later, it was restored, and now it can be seen in all its former splendor.

There is a special atmosphere inside the fortress itself. You can walk along the ancient walls and imagine yourself as a medieval resident. Impressive towers, which are also accessible to visitors. Just be sure to stock up on a flashlight. It is very dark inside the towers, and the stairs are quite steep. But there is an opportunity to climb the highest of them. And there is a stunning view of the neighboring Narva fortress.
The Ivangorod fortress hides a lot of underground passages and tunnels through which it was possible to exit or enter unnoticed. They were so well camouflaged that the enemy could not notice them. From the sights of the fortress, the Assumption Cathedral of the 14th century stands out. And right in front of the cathedral is St. Nicholas Church. There is a museum in the fortress. It contains ancient objects found during excavations in Ivangorod.

Ivangorod is located in the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region. You can get here by train or minibus from St. Petersburg. But this is a border zone and they don't just let you through.
