Macao's Leading Casinos Innovate with New Side Bet to Increase Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)

Major casino operators in Macao are rolling out innovative betting options to drive growth in gross gaming revenue (GGR). One of the latest additions is the Big/Small 7 side bet, which has already been implemented across many top casinos in the region, according to analysts at Citigroup.

What Is the Big/Small 7 Bet?

Similar to the popular Lucky 7 bet, the Big/Small 7 wager challenges players to predict whether the winning hand will consist of two or three cards. This dynamic twist adds excitement to the game and, as noted by Citigroup analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau, could enhance player engagement. Additionally, the new bet is expected to boost casino hold rates, further increasing profitability.

Two Strategic Approaches to Side Bets in Macao

Macao’s casinos are adopting different strategies when it comes to side bets:

  • Wynn, MGM, and Melco have opted for a "less is more" approach, removing traditional side bets like Lucky 6 and Lucky 7 to streamline gameplay.

  • Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment, on the other hand, are offering a full range of side bets, catering to players who enjoy more variety.

August Surge: High Stakes and Premium Players

The new betting options were introduced in August, Macao’s peak tourist season. As a result, the average bet size has increased by 10% year-over-year.

Market Leaders in Macao’s Casino Industry

According to Citigroup:

  • Galaxy Entertainment dominates the premium segment, holding 34% of the market share.

  • Sands China follows in second place with 23%.

Rise of High Rollers

Macao has also seen an increase in high-stakes players:

  • In August, 32 high rollers were recorded, up from 25 in the same period last year.

  • The largest single bet reached HK$450,000 (≈$57,500 USD), placed by a VIP player in the Horizon Room at Galaxy Macau.

Why This Matters for the U.S. Audience

While Macao’s gaming market differs from the U.S., the introduction of innovative side bets like Big/Small 7 highlights a growing trend in casino gaming: enhancing player engagement through dynamic betting options. As U.S. casinos continue to evolve, similar innovations could emerge in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and emerging markets.
