[via NPA NewsBrief] American Jewelry and Loan Owner, and star of “Hardcore Pawn,” Les Gold on why the business at pawnshops is an indicator of how the economy is doing and how they fill the short-term lending void not filled by banks. “We can tell you six months in advance how the economy is going. We have two lines, one line is for the people bringing in merchandise, one line is for people taking out their merchandise,” Gold told the FOX Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo.

-Applicants should have a proven ability to work with a high level of flexibility while consistently demonstrating sound judgment, accuracy, and attention to detail.
-The position requires a well-organized, self-motivated individual who is able to multitask and analyze information in a fast paced environment.
-Excellent customer service and communication skills
-All serious candidates will be subject to a background check.

We spoke to “Hardcore Pawn” star Seth Gold — who runs some of the most famous pawn shops in the county — and he says his stores have been bombarded with Ali stuff in the wake of his death.

Gold says everyone thinks their Ali stuff has rocketed in value — and they’re asking for insanely high prices.

Ali stuff is highly valued already — and there is a higher demand — but Gold says his death won’t double, triple or quadruple the prices on things like autographs, pictures, etc.

[via The New York Times] HONG KONG — In a packed bidding room last Monday, Christie’s Hong Kong hosted its 30th-anniversary auction. The tightly curated catalog featured 30 lots, each chosen for its desirability and origin in categories such as fine art, ancient ceramics, jewelry, watches and rare wines.

And handbags.

One of the auction’s stars was a 12-inch Hermès Birkin matte Himalayan crocodile handbag, with white-gold hardware set with 245 F-color diamonds weighing close to 10 carats. With a presale estimate of $190,000 to $260,000, it was billed as “the most valuable handbag in the world.”

So it may be no surprise that there’s a place for the owners of Detroit’s largest pawn store at the Grand Hotel.

Business expansion, legislative debate, and employee retention are all top of mind for Detroit’s regional leaders as they gather for the annual conference sponsored by the Detroit Regional Chamber.

And, I learned today, that those are the same issues that brought Les Gold and Seth Gold to the island.
